Mrs. Marainne Berkemeier / Reading Recovery and Literacy Coach
I am a Reading Recovery teacher and literacy coach at Townsend Elementary. I graduated from University of Dayton years ago and have a double certification in Elementary Education and Special Education and have my Masters credits in Reading through Indiana Univiersity and Oakland University. As a Reading Recovery teacher we are consistantly being coached and taught the best ways to teach and move the struggling learner. There are two Reading Recovery teachers at Townsend and I am blessed to be one of them. I have been in this position for 14 years and have enjoyed immensely working one on one with first graders in Reading Recovery and in small groups as a Literacy coach . The philosophy of Reading Recovery "is when we take the minority group ( the lowest 20 percent of children near the beginning of their formal schooling) and provide short-term individual intensive care we can get an accelerated turn-around in learning, which enables those children to catch up to their peers." As a Literacy coach, I work with the next higher level of students in the lower grades in literacy. These are children who are identified by their teachers (and in addition to their reading groups within the classroom.) They are pulled out by myself or Lisa Abel (the other Reading Recovery teacher) and placed in our small literacy groups with intense reading/writing instruction . These are children who are not able to keep up with the terrific rate of progress of their peers in literacy and can greatly benefit from small group intervention. It is great gift for myself that I have have been able to teach here at Townsend with a very dedicated and very hard working staff who work tirelessly for the greater achievement of the children at Townsend Elementary School. God bless you all.
