Townsend families: if you are dropping kids off at school and coming from Francis Street, go through Polly’s- all McDevitt is torn up due to construction!
Looking forward to our first day of the new school year. Remember that all 'in-person' students and bus rides MUST wear face masks. Please ensure that your student has their mask and a refillable water bottle. Carefully and safely...Let's get this school year started!
Afternoon latchkey has been cancelled for Wednesday (8/26), Thursday (8/27) and Friday (8/28) due to warm weather conditions. We will still have morning latchkey available on those days. We apologize for the inconvenience.
Jayhawk Nation: with warmer temps headed our way, a decision has been made to switch to half-days on Thursday and Friday. Release times for W/Th/F will be 11 am at the MS/HS and 12:05 pm at Townsend. Sack lunches will be provided to all 'in person' students.
Good Evening, Jayhawk families, This is Jamie Stanley with some announcements. First day of school is this Wednesday at 8:30am with dismissal at 12:05pm. Teachers will be contacting all virtual only students this week to give directions on their virtual learning. If your child is a hybrid and coming Tuesdays and Thursdays, then their first day will be on Thursday, Aug 27. Please turn in your free and reduced lunch form with your student to give to the teacher. Parents: your child’s classroom teacher is working very hard to get everything ready, prepared, and safe. However, they also have families of their own they take care of. Please understand that any communication made to the teachers after normal school hours may not be returned until the next school day. Latchkey: If you are signed up for morning latchkey (6:30am-8:30am), please drop your child off at the west exit. The procedure for latchkey will be: Please call 867-6261 and let the latchkey teacher know you are dropping off in the morning or picking up in the afternoon. They will come get your student outside for arrival or bring your student out to you for dismissal. Masks must be worn in latchkey by all students. Arrival: Please stay in your vehicles to drop off your student. Again, parents will not be allowed in the building at this time. Students will be allowed in the building at 8:15am. Dismissal: Please stay in your vehicles for pick up. K-2 students will exit out of the doors by the gym and 3-6 students will exit out of west wing doors if you have children in multiple grades advise them to dismiss out the exit their youngest sibling is assigned. There will be cones up to help the flow of students. Please be patient as the first few days will be hectic. We will be doing a backward dismissal this year starting with 6th grade. Please be on time to pick up your child/ren as we want to make this as quick and smooth as possible. We will also plan to provide breakfasts and lunches to our remote learners on Mondays and Wednesdays from 9:30-10:15am at the HS. If you are interested and have not already spoken to someone to sign up, please call the office and let the secretaries know. Please remember that all students have to wear masks. We will be providing times for students to be able to take their masks off. We will be handing out masks for every student, a breakaway lanyard for students to hook onto their masks on the first day of school. Finally, we have everything in place to help your child, but we are all learning how to navigate this new way of school. I ask that you please be patient and understanding with our new policies and procedures. We are getting really excited about the new year! As always, thank you for your support. Have a great week! Go Jayhawks!
Attention bus riding families: bus stop times are currently being worked on. Please anticipate a call on Tuesday letting families know the approximate time their student can expect to be picked up in the morning. We appreciate your patience and understanding on the matter.
Townsend: In your welcome back letter, it says that our school starts at 8:00 am. That is INCORRECT. Our school day begins at 8:30am this year. We apologize for the confusion.

Vandercook Lake Public School Community: On Wednesday, January 8th, school administrators were informed of a possible threat to the middle/high school. This report came to the administration after school had dismissed for the day. The administration immediately notified the Jackson County Sheriff’s office and started to conduct an investigation into the matter. Through a collaborative investigation, the identity of the student responsible for making the statement has been verified. The district has been notified by the Jackson County Sheriff’s Department that the student who made the original statement has been detained as a precautionary measure as the investigation continues. With the student currently under the direct supervision of the Jackson County Sheriff’s Department, it has been determined that the Vandercook Lake Public Schools will be open tomorrow, Thursday, January 8th, 2020. Parents and students may notice an additional police presence at the start of school. The additional police presence was requested by the school district. I want to assure our community that we take these types of threats seriously and that the safety of our students and staff is our highest priority. Scott Leach Superintendent Vandercook Lake Public Schools
A great story to share. A parent whose child enlisted in the Navy was hoping to have banners hung on McDevitt Ave. to honor her son and five other 2019 graduates that are now in the Navy serving our country. When the utility poles on McDevitt were deemed as not an option she asked the schools if she could hang the banners at our school. The banners were hung yesterday through the generous assistance of Johnson Sign (Mr. Jim Johnson) and Mr. Kevin Hull. We hope this will serve as a reminder of all the Jayhawks who are currently serving our country in the different braches of the military. #JayhawkStrong #BelieveAchieveSOAR

A message from the Superintendent: Vandercook Lake Community, this afternoon 911 officials contacted our district that there was a possible threat in the community and advised our buildings to go into lockdown as a precautionary action. When we received the call from 911, Townsend Elementary had just been dismissed and the busses were headed on their routes Bus drivers were directed to head to the Middle Schoool gymnasium to drop off our elementary students until further notice. Shortly after the final bus was unloaded, the district was notified by 911 officials that the lockdown could be lifted. Details were shared that the initial report turned out to not be true and the students were never in any danger. Students were quickly loaded back onto their busses and delivered home somewhere between 30 and 40 minutes later than their usual time. As the Superintendent, I was proud of how our staff handled the situation. Parapros, secretaries, bus drivers, administration and professional staff all delivered during this situation to ensure that the students in our care were safe and comforted during these tense moments. I am so proud to call myself a Jayhawk and to be a part of such a wonderful group. Great Job Jayhawks!
Hello Jayhawk families. We were notified by the Jackson Police Department after school today of possible suspicious activity in our area. As a precaution, both Townsend Elementary and the middle/high school went into a lockdown. As a precaution, all elementary busses were routed to the middle school gym until the information was received from our police department. After securing the area, the police notified our administration to lift the lockdown due to the fact that it was a FALSE REPORT. All elementary students who ride a bus are currently being safely transported home at this time. Busses will run 30 to 40 minutes behind. As always, our students and staff safety are our number one concern here at Vandercook Lake. Thank you for your patience.
Transportation from all busses may be delayed 10-20 min today. We apologize for the inconvenience. Thank you for your cooperation.
