Jackson County ISD issued the following statement after voters overwhelming approved the countywide Special Education Millage Renewal Proposal: “We want to thank the greater Jackson County community for renewing the special education millage proposal, which will allow our local districts to continue providing a high quality education to all Jackson County students. While this millage will reimburse schools for their mandated special education costs, all students will benefit because schools won’t have to move resources from other programs to cover these costs. Our core mission is working in partnership with local schools and the community, and we are committed to the success of all students. The passage of this renewal affirms our community’s strong support of our local districts and the generous hearts of voters who continue to support our students with special needs. Thank you so much, it is our honor to serve!” ~ Kevin Oxley, Jackson County ISD Superintendent

Dear Vandercook Lake Staff and Families, Don’t forget to vote on May 2! On May 2, 2023, a question regarding a Special Education Millage Renewal will be on the ballot. No new taxes are being proposed. This renewal would cost homeowners with a market value of $100,000 or a taxable value of $50,000, $77.04 per year or $6.42 per month. If approved, this would generate approximately $8,800,000 for students with special education needs in the Jackson County ISD service area, which includes our school district. During the 2022-23 school year, this millage brought $376,207 to Vandercook Lake Public Schools. If the millage fails, districts would still have to cover those mandated special education costs, resulting in fewer dollars to support programs for ALL students. Every registered voter who lives in our school district, whether a property owner, or not, is eligible to vote. For more information, to review frequently asked questions or view the ballot language, please visit the Jackson County ISD website at www.jcisd.org. Thank you.

Special Education Millage Renewal on May Ballot Local school districts are mandated by law to provide special education programs and services. However, the federal and state governments have not adequately funded special education in the past, placing the burden on local and intermediate school districts. Without additional millage funds, local school districts are forced to use general education funds to pay for special education programs and services. On the May 2 ballot, voters will be asked to renew the Jackson County Intermediate School District Special Education Millage. A taxpayer who owns a home with a market value of $100,000 (taxable value of $50,000) would pay $77.04 per year or $6.42 per month in renewed millage.
