Today, the 1st & 2nd grade students in Ms Simpson's class learned about Henry Box Brown, an African American slave who mailed himself to freedom. We measured out the dimensions of the box (crate) that Henry used, and the kids got to climb inside to show how they would position themselves in such a small space. We talked about the fact that we don't know how thick the wood was (so the space inside the box was even smaller). We learned that Mr. Brown was an adult and, therefore, a lot bigger than them. We watched a short video, an online storybook, and wrote a class poem.
